## What's Included in This Barn Red Chicken Coop Plan
The Redwick turns the usual layout around. The barn-red board-and-batten coop with white trim stands in front, where you work every day, with the white Z-brace door two steps up and the nest box at chest height beside it, and the run lies behind it, sheltered and out of the way. The run is wider than the coop: it spans the whole back and reaches 6 ft past each end, and its two wings each carry a walk-in door right beside the coop. One shingled roof, cut in the shape of an upside-down T, rises from the coop's low front eave over the coop and the run to a high back edge more than 14 ft up.
- 12' x 10' walk-in coop with 107 sq ft of floor inside, 7' 2-1/2" high at the front wall rising to 9' 6-3/4" at the back wall, on short posts with the floor 2' 1-1/2" up
- Walk-in run behind the coop and both wings with about 160 sq ft of ground, all under the roof, and up to 12' 10" clear under the back beam
- White Z-brace coop door 32" x 72-1/2" two steps up, and a 31-1/2" x 75-3/4" run door in the front of each wing
- Outside nest box on the front wall beside the door, with 5 nests at chest height and a shingled lid for collecting eggs without going in
- Three 110" roost bars with 330" of perch over a removable dropping board
- Guillotine pop door in the middle of the back wall with a cleated ramp into the run
- Two six-lite casement windows high in the back wall over the run, a wide nine-lite casement in the left end wall, louvered vents in both end walls and screened eaves
- T-shaped shed roof at 3/12 with 2x8 rafters, ice-and-water membrane, architectural asphalt shingles and three gutters on the low eaves
- 1/2" hardware cloth on the run with a 24" apron
- Estimated material cost of about $6,900 to $8,900 (prices vary by region and season)
## Large Walk-In Chicken Coop with Run Behind for 20 to 25 Hens
The coop gives 4.3 to 5.4 sq ft per hen and the covered run 6.4 to 8 sq ft per hen, so this large chicken coop houses 20 to 25 chickens; for 25 hens add some supervised free-range time. The 5 nests follow the rule of one nest for every 5 hens, and the three roosts give about 13" of perch per hen at 25.
## File Format, Paper Size and Measurements
The plan is a 72-page PDF on US Letter paper. All dimensions are in feet and inches for standard US lumber, with the main sizes also listed in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always use the written dimensions.
## Who This Walk-In Chicken Coop Plan Is For
This is an intermediate build for DIY builders who are comfortable with a circular saw, a jigsaw, a drill/driver, an impact driver and basic framing. Two people can build it in about 10 to 12 weekend days, plus painting. Spring is the busiest building season, so fall and winter are a good time to price lumber and prepare the site before new chicks arrive. It also makes a practical gift for a backyard chicken keeper.

## Frequently Asked Questions
### Why is the chicken run behind the coop?
The coop door and the nest box face you at the front, where you go every day, while the run sits behind, sheltered by the coop and out of sight. The hens walk straight down the ramp from the pop door into the run, and you walk in through either wing door.
### Can I make the chicken run bigger?
Yes. Lengthen each wing in 24" bays by moving the end posts out, lengthening the wing beams and the back beam, and adding one run rafter and a back post per bay.
### Is a 3/12 shed roof steep enough for shingles?
Yes. 3/12 is above the 2/12 minimum of most shingle makers, provided the whole deck gets ice-and-water membrane or a double layer of underlayment, as shown in the plan.
### Do I need a building permit for this chicken coop?
It depends on your town. The coop floor is 120 sq ft, the roof about 393 sq ft and the high edge about 14' 5-5/16", so check your local rules before you build.
### How do I download the PDF after purchase?
