## The Lap Siding, Ribbon Window and Single-Slope Roof

The walls are clad in 8 in engineered-wood lap siding with a 6 in exposure, painted slate blue, with white corner boards, casings, door skirt, fascias and rakes. The single-slope roof rises toward the left and runs 24 in past the tall wall. High in that wall, a 6 ft three-lite ribbon window brings light down onto the desk.

## Floor Plan of the 12x16 Backyard Office

The 192 sq ft room has a 36 in full-lite door and a big 4 x 5 ft window on the front, plus the 72 x 24 in ribbon window high in the left wall. The left wall is 10' 3-1/8" tall and the right wall is 7' 4", so the ceiling rises toward the window wall. The room fits a 48 in desk under the ribbon window, two bookcases on the back wall and a reading corner, and the door still swings clear.

## Construction Details of This Modern Office Shed

## File Format, Paper Size and Units

The plan is a 52-page PDF sized for US Letter paper. All dimensions are in imperial units (feet and inches), and lumber is named by nominal size and drawn at actual size; the master cut list also gives millimetres for reference. You can print the pages or read them on a tablet or laptop at the build site.

## Who This DIY Office Shed Is For

This plan is rated Intermediate. Two people can build most of it, with 3 to 4 people to raise the tall wall and set the rafters, in about 4 to 5 weekends. Spring is a popular time to start, so many builders buy the plan and order the door and windows over the winter.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

After checkout, you can download the PDF from the download link on your order confirmation page and in your confirmation email. The download is instant, and nothing is shipped.

### Do I need a permit for a 12x16 shed?

Most likely yes, because a 12x16 shed has 192 sq ft, which is over the 120 sq ft limit many US towns use for permit-free sheds. Check local codes, setbacks and HOA rules before you buy materials.

### Can I use fiber-cement lap siding on this shed?

Yes, you can use fiber-cement lap siding with the same 6 in exposure and the maker's nails and clearances. It is heavier, so use a blade made for fiber cement and wear a dust mask.

### Can I flip the plan so the tall wall is on the right?

Yes, build everything as a mirror image with the tall wall on the right and the rafter template and stud bevels mirrored. All lengths stay the same.

### Can I use asphalt shingles on this single-slope shed?

Not on this 3/12 pitch without special low-slope underlayment. Ribbed metal or standing-seam panels are the right choice.
