## Monitor Roof Design with an Open Clerestory
The Ashford is a 3 car carport with a raised center roof, often called a monitor roof or raised center aisle. Two low 3/12 shed wings cover the outer bays, and a taller 4/12 gable monitor sits over the middle bay. The open clerestory band between them lets light in and lets hot air and exhaust escape.
- Each of the 4 post rows is a portal frame with a doubled 2x8 row tie and 4x6 knee braces
- Wing rafters sit on the outer beams and the wing headers; monitor rafters sit on the monitor plates and are joined by 2x6 ties
- Wings are framed and roofed first, so you work under open sky before the monitor goes up
- Footprint: 864 sq ft frame, about 1,019 sq ft of roof surface
- Foundation: 16 concrete piers, 12" diameter on 24" bell footings, 42" deep or below your frost line
- Design basis: conventional post-and-beam practice for ground snow up to about 20 psf and ordinary inland wind, not an engineered design

## Who This 36x24 Carport Plan Is For
This plan suits DIY builders with framing experience who want a large three car carport with a distinctive barn look. The inner posts, monitor plates and monitor rafters are 14 to 18 ft up, so plan for scaffold or a rented lift and two or three helpers. Every cut, bolt and connector is listed in the plan.

## Frequently Asked Questions
### What is the purpose of a monitor roof on a carport?
A monitor roof raises the center section above the side wings, and the open clerestory between them lets daylight in and lets hot air and exhaust out. On this carport it also gives the middle bay extra headroom.
### How big of a carport do I need for 3 cars?
A 36x24 carport gives three bays of about 11' 5" clear width and 24' of depth, enough for three cars, trucks or SUVs parked side by side.
### Do I need a permit for a 3 car carport?
An 864 sq ft 3 car carport needs a building permit almost everywhere. Show these carport plans to your building department and check its height limit for accessory structures.
### Can I use shingles on this monitor roof carport?
Yes, with changes: shingles need solid 1/2" plywood sheathing instead of purlins and a double layer of underlayment on the 3/12 wings. The heights in this monitor roof carport plan are drawn for metal panels on purlins.
