## Floor Plan of the 22x36 A-Frame Loft Cabin

The living room is open to the ridge behind the glass front gable. A kitchen with an island and a bathroom with a soaking tub sit under the sleeping loft. At the back, a vaulted bedroom of 8' 11" x 21' 1" is also open to the ridge. A straight 15-riser stair in the middle of the living room leads to the sleeping loft of 10' 7-1/2" x 15' 1". The 4 ft knee walls make the ground floor usable almost wall to wall, and the 8 ft deck runs the full width of the front.

## Construction Details of This Raised A-Frame Cabin

- Foundation: 35 concrete piers in 5 rows with five built-up pressure-treated girders
- Floor: 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 in on center with 3/4 in tongue-and-groove subfloor
- Walls: 4 ft knee walls that seat the rafters, plus framed front, back and gable walls
- Structure: Structural LVL ridge beam on three posts, so the rafters push no thrust onto the knee walls
- Roof: 2x12 rafters at 24 in on center at 60 degrees (21/12), black standing-seam metal, 12 in rake overhangs and gutters on both eaves
- Exterior: Cedar cladding, vertical on the gables and horizontal on the knee walls, with black windows and trim
- Design basis: Roof snow load up to 40 psf and wind up to 115 mph (Exposure B); have the ridge beam, posts and connections reviewed locally

## File Format, Paper Size and Units

The plan is a 60-page PDF sized for US Letter paper. All dimensions are in imperial units (feet and inches), and lumber is listed by nominal size. You can print the pages or read them on a tablet or laptop on the job site.

## Who This DIY A-Frame Cabin Plan Is For

This plan suits DIY builders with framing experience who want a small A-frame house with a loft. The gables need three people, and the ridge beam needs a rented lift or crane. A building permit is needed almost everywhere, so take the plan to your local building department early. Many builders plan over the winter and are ready to build in spring.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

After checkout, you can download the PDF from the download link on your order confirmation page and in your confirmation email. The download is instant, and nothing is shipped.

### What are the downsides of an A-frame house?

The main downsides of an A-frame house are sloped walls that cut into floor space and a steep roof that can shed snow suddenly. This A-frame house plan raises the roof on 4 ft knee walls, so the ground floor is usable almost wall to wall.

### Is an A-frame house cheaper to build?

Whether an A-frame house is cheaper to build depends on local material and labor prices. This plan includes a full shopping list and cut list, so you can price your A-frame build before you start.

### Is the loft in this A-frame a legal bedroom?

Whether the loft counts as a bedroom depends on your local code for stairs, egress and ceiling height. The ground floor bedroom of this A-frame has two egress windows.

### Can I build this A-frame cabin on a slab?

Yes, you can build this A-frame cabin on a slab by skipping the pier, girder and floor steps and using pressure-treated bottom plates, anchor bolts and a footing under each ridge post. The deck and steps change.
