## Floor Plan of the 24x32 A-Frame Cabin with Loft

French doors open from the front deck into a great room that is open to the roof peak under the glass gable, with the living area, a wood stove spot and a reading nook. The kitchen and dining area of 15' 0" x 11' 11" sits in the side wing, which has its own entry door from the side deck. At the back, a bedroom and a bath with laundry, each 11' 2-3/4" x 8' 7", sit under the sleeping loft, reached by a 39 in wide stair with 15 risers.

## The Kitchen Wing, Glass Gable and Wraparound Deck

The wing adds full-height space to the A-frame under a 3/12 shed roof that rests on an LVL header over the opening to the great room. The front gable holds French doors, a matching picture window and two tall gable windows, and the 32' x 8' front deck wraps along the wing as a side deck.

## How the Steep 18/12 A-Frame Roof Works

The 2x10 rafters hang from a structural 4-ply LVL ridge beam on two posts, so they push straight down. That is why the plan needs no ties across the room and the great room stays open to the peak.

## Construction Details of This A-Frame Cabin

- Foundation: 36 concrete piers with four 3-ply 2x10 pressure-treated beams and 2 pad beams under the header posts
- Floor: 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 in on center, 3/4 in tongue-and-groove subfloor and R-19 insulation; decks with 2x6 joists at 12 in on center and 5/4x6 decking
- Walls: 24 in knee walls under the rafters, 2x6 lower gable walls with 3-ply 2x12 headers and 2x6 wing walls
- Roof: 18/12 (56.3 degree) A-frame with 2x10 rafters at 24 in on center; 3/12 wing roof with 2x12 rafters at 16 in on center; 5/8 in sheathing and standing-seam metal
- Loft: 2x10 joists bolted beside the rafters, a 38 in guard and a handrail
- Siding: cedar lap siding on the A-frame and charcoal vertical boards on the wing
- Windows and doors: French doors with a matching picture window, 2 tall gable windows, 2 loft egress windows, bedroom, bath, kitchen and dining windows, an entry door and 2 interior doors
- Build time: a crew of 3 to 4 plus a lift or crane for the ridge beam, about 14 to 18 weekends for the shell

## Who This DIY A-Frame Plan Is For

This plan is rated for advanced DIY builders or experienced builders. You will need a crew of 3 to 4 and a lift or crane to set the ridge beam. A building permit is needed almost everywhere, so take the plan to your local building department early. Many builders plan over the winter and are ready to build in spring.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

After checkout, you can download the PDF from the download link on your order confirmation page and in your confirmation email. The download is instant, and nothing is shipped.

### What are the downsides of an A-frame house?

The main downsides of an A-frame house are the low space near the sloped walls and snow that slides off the steep roof all at once. This plan adds a full-height kitchen wing, and the PDF shows where to keep paths clear or add snow guards.

### Can I build this A-frame without the kitchen wing?

Yes, you can leave the wing off by framing the right side like the left, with a knee wall and full rafters, and moving the kitchen into the great room. The deck then becomes rectangular.

### Is the loft in this A-frame cabin a bedroom?

It is a sleeping loft with egress windows, and local rules for loft headroom, guards and stairs vary, so check them with your building department.

### Can I build this A-frame on a slab instead of piers?

Yes, you can replace Steps 1 to 4 with a slab and anchor bolts, with the walls starting on a pressure-treated sill plate. All heights above the subfloor stay the same.
