- 7 renderings of the finished cabin and a material palette

## How the 45° and 64° Roofs Shape the Layout

The Skarv is an A-frame with two different roofs. The long 45° roof on the left holds four skylights, and the short, steep 64° roof on the right gives the kitchen side more wall height. The ridge sits 162-3/4" from the left side, so both gables are off-center triangles.

- Great room: living area at the glass gable, dining under the skylights, kitchen with an island on the steep side
- Bedroom: at the back, with an egress window and a skylight
- Bathroom: at the back, with space for a tub, a double vanity and a WC

Inside, the apex is 13' 2-1/8" above the floor, and a 9' 8-3/16" wide band of the floor has 6' 8" headroom or more. A full-height 2x4 cross partition with two doors separates the great room from the bedroom and bathroom.

## Skylights, Glass Gable and Cedar Siding

The front glass gable has a 6' sliding door and two fixed glass units up to the ridge. Four deck-mount skylights sit between the long rafters, with headers framed in Step 12. Natural cedar vertical siding, black rake boards and trim and a matte black standing-seam roof give the cabin its modern Nordic look, and a 20' x 8' deck runs across the front.

## File Format, Paper Size and Units

The plan is a single PDF file sized for US Letter paper. Print it, or open it on a tablet or laptop on site. All dimensions are in imperial units with fractions to 1/16", and the master cut list also gives each length in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always build from the written dimensions.

## Who This Modified A-Frame Plan Is For

This is an advanced DIY plan. Raising the pairs with 20 ft rafters needs at least three people and scaffolding. Plumbing and electrical work should be done by licensed trades.

The frame is laid out for a ground snow load of up to about 40 psf and moderate wind. Because the roof is asymmetric, the rafter pairs, heel joints, gussets and foundation must be checked by a local engineer, and most building departments ask for poured concrete piers for a year-round home. Getting the plan over the winter leaves time for that review and for ordering the glass and skylights before the spring building season.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

You can download the PDF right after purchase from the link on the order confirmation page and in your confirmation email. Save it to your device so you can print it or open it at any time.

### What is an asymmetric A-frame house?

An asymmetric A-frame house uses two different roof pitches with an off-center ridge instead of two equal slopes. In this plan, a long 45° roof with four skylights meets a short, steep 64° roof.

### Does this asymmetric A-frame house plan have a bedroom and bathroom?

Yes, this asymmetric A-frame house plan has an 11' 10-1/2" x 9' 3-3/4" bedroom and a 6' 11" x 9' 3-3/4" bathroom at the back. The great room in front holds the living, dining and kitchen areas.

### What are the downsides of an A-frame house?

The main downside of an A-frame house is the sloped walls, which limit headroom near the sides. In this plan, a 9' 8-3/16" wide band of the floor has 6' 8" headroom or more.

### Do I need an engineer for this A-frame house plan?

Yes, this A-frame house plan is not an engineered or stamped drawing set, and the asymmetric rafter pairs, heel joints, gussets and foundation must be checked by a local engineer. They will size them for your snow, wind and seismic loads.
