## Modern Butterfly Roof Design with a Rain Chain Valley

The Monarch is a modern single carport with a butterfly roof: two 3/12 wings slope down from the high side eaves into a center valley, forming an inverted V. The whole frame falls 1/2" per foot toward the back, so rain runs along the valley and drops down a rain chain at the valley outlet.

- Each post row has a 2x12 cross beam on both faces of the posts and a 6x6 valley block at the center
- A doubled 2x10 valley beam carries the inner ends of the rafters, which lap in pairs over it
- Black fascia and V-barge boards outline the butterfly shape against cedar-tone posts and beams
- Footprint: 260 sq ft frame, about 307 sq ft of roof surface
- Foundation: 8 concrete piers, 12" diameter on 24" bell footings, 42" deep or below your frost line
- Design basis: conventional post-and-beam practice for ground snow up to about 20 psf and ordinary inland wind, not an engineered design

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the point of a butterfly roof on a carport?

A butterfly roof gives a carport a modern inverted V shape and sends all the rain to one center valley, where this plan collects it with a rain chain. The high outer eaves also leave an open, airy feel around the car.

### What are the disadvantages of a butterfly roof?

The main drawback of a butterfly roof is that the valley must be kept clear of leaves and needles, and snow can drift into it. This plan uses W-valley flashing and a 1/2" per foot fall, and it asks you to clear the valley twice a year.

### Can I use shingles on a butterfly roof carport?

No, shingles need a steeper slope and do not work in a valley this shallow, so this butterfly roof carport uses metal panels.

### Can the rain chain be at the front of the carport?

Yes, reverse the post table so the longest posts are at the back, then put the valley spout and rain chain at the front.

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

After checkout, a download link for the PDF appears on the order confirmation page and in your confirmation email. Click it to save the carport plans to your computer, tablet or phone.
