## The Butterfly Roof and Center Valley
Twelve 2x8 rafters at 3/12 rise from a tripled 2x8 center beam to the high eaves, so both roof wings drain into a center valley lined with 2x12 valley boards and W-valley flashing under galvalume ribbed panels. The whole roof tilts about 1-7/8 in from front to back, so the valley drains to the back.
## Two Bays for About 5 Cords of Firewood
Each 111-3/4 in bay holds about 2-1/2 cords of 16 in wood, five rows deep and 64 in high, so the full pavilion holds about 5 cords, roughly 10 tons of seasoned hardwood. There are 64-3/4 in of clear stacking height under the front headers, and every post stands over a joist so the floor can carry the load.
## Construction Details of This Firewood Pavilion
- Foundation: 18 solid concrete blocks 16 x 8 x 4 in on compacted gravel, six pressure-treated 4x4 runners and 6 earth anchors
- Floor: two bolted 2x6 modules with nine joists each and 28 2x6 deck boards with 1 in gaps, deck 10-1/2 in above the blocks
- Structure: 6x6 posts, doubled 2x8 headers and end beams, a tripled 2x8 center beam and six 4x4 knee braces
- Roof: 3/12 butterfly roof with twelve 2x8 rafters, 2x4 purlins, 2x12 valley boards, W-valley flashing and galvalume ribbed panels
- Walls: open front; back and end walls in board-on-board 1x6, two offset layers that give privacy and still let air through
- Finish as rendered: slate blue solid stain on the posts, beams, rafters and fascia, cedar-tone walls, a natural deck and a galvalume roof
- Build time: 2 to 3 people, about 4 weekends

## Frequently Asked Questions
### How do I download the PDF after purchase?
After checkout, you can download the PDF from the download link on your order confirmation page and in your confirmation email. The download is instant, and nothing is shipped.
### Where does the rain go on a butterfly roof?
On this butterfly roof, both wings drain into the center valley, which runs about 1-7/8 in downhill from the front edge to the back edge. Put a rain chain, splash block or rain barrel under the back end of the valley.
### Can a butterfly roof valley leak?
The panels overlap the W-valley flashing by 7-1/4 in, and the only screws through the flashing sit 8 in up from the valley center on butyl tape. Keep the butterfly roof valley clear of leaves.
### What are the disadvantages of a butterfly roof?
A butterfly roof collects leaves and holds snow in its valley, so clear the valley every fall and after storms. In heavy-snow regions, ask a local builder and add a rafter row at 16 in on center.
### Can I close the front of this firewood pavilion?
Yes, you can add board-on-board doors to this firewood pavilion or leave the front open. Firewood seasons best with the front open.
