## Floor Plan of the 20x28 Two Story Cabin
The front door opens from the porch into a vaulted great room with the living area, dining area and kitchen. At the back, a bedroom of 9' 2-3/4" x 11' 2" and a bath with laundry of the same size sit under the loft. A 36 in wide stair with 15 risers leads up to an open loft bedroom of 220 sq ft, with about 183 sq ft at 5 ft or more of headroom and a 38 in guard.
## The Timber Frame Porch and Glass Gable
The 20' x 8' covered porch is framed with 6x6 posts, 6x10 tie and eave beams, a 6x6 king post under the ridge and 4x4 knee braces. Above the porch, the cedar front gable holds two triangle glass panes that light the vaulted great room.
## How the Steep 12/12 Gable Roof Works
The 2x10 rafters hang from a structural 3-ply LVL ridge beam on posts, so they push straight down and the walls do not spread. That is why the plan needs no ceiling ties and the great room stays fully vaulted.
## Construction Details of This Small Cabin
- Foundation: 21 concrete piers in three rows with three 3-ply 2x10 pressure-treated beams 36 ft long
- Floor: 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 in on center, 3/4 in tongue-and-groove subfloor and R-19 insulation
- Walls: 2x6 studs at 16 in on center, 145 in tall balloon-height side walls that carry the loft ledger, 7/16 in OSB and board and batten siding
- Loft: 2x10 joists at 16 in on center on ledgers and a 2x6 center bearing wall
- Roof: 12/12 (45 degree) gable, 2x10 rafters at 24 in on center, 5/8 in sheathing, synthetic underlayment and standing-seam metal
- Windows and doors: a 36 in full-lite exterior door, 9 window openings including 2 triangle panes, and 2 interior doors
- Build time: a crew of 3 to 4 for wall raising and the ridge, about 10 to 14 weekends for the shell
