Frequently Asked Questions
How big of a coop do I need for 20 chickens?
This coop gives 20 hens about 3.5 sq ft per bird inside and 8.1 sq ft per bird in the run, which is the low end of common guidelines. For more room per bird, plan for 15-16 hens.
Can I use chicken wire instead of hardware cloth on the run?
No. Chicken wire keeps chickens in but does not keep raccoons, dogs or weasels out, so this chicken run plan specifies 1/2" galvanized hardware cloth.
Can I make the chicken run shorter or longer?
Yes. You can change the run in steps of 43-1/2" (one post bay), keep the coop as drawn, and recalculate the plates, ridge, fascia, sheathing, skirt boards and hardware cloth.
Are the chicken coop plans in imperial or metric?
The chicken coop plans use imperial feet and inches throughout. The master cut list also gives metric values for reference.
How do I download the PDF after purchase?
