## How the Post-and-Beam Base Lifts the Cabin
The Kestrel is an A-frame cabin on stilts. Fifteen 6x6 posts stand on concrete piers poured below the frost line and carry three beams under the floor. Knee braces along the beams and 2x6 cross braces across every post row stiffen the base, and the 2x8 floor joists also work as rafter ties for each A-frame pair.
The raised front deck sits on its own posts, and a 14-step stair runs down about 11' 2-3/4" to a 4' landing pad. Because the floor is open to the air, the plan shows how to insulate the joist bays and close the underside with soffit panels.
## Floor Plan With Bedroom and Bathroom
- Great room: living area at the glass gable, dining in the middle and a kitchen along the right side
- Bedroom: at the back, with an egress casement window and space for a queen bed
- Bathroom: at the back, with space for a tub, a vanity and a WC
Inside, the apex is 13' 11-7/8" above the floor, and a 10' 3-1/16" wide band of the floor has 6' 8" headroom or more. A full-height 2x4 cross partition with two doors separates the great room from the bedroom and bathroom.
## File Format, Paper Size and Units
The plan is a single PDF file sized for US Letter paper. Print it, or open it on a tablet or laptop on site. All dimensions are in imperial units with fractions to 1/16", and the master cut list also gives each length in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always build from the written dimensions.
## Who This Stilt House Plan Is For
This is an advanced DIY plan. The posts, beams and floor are built from the ground with ladders, and all work above the floor needs scaffolding and at least three people. Plumbing and electrical work should be done by licensed trades.
The frame is laid out for a ground snow load of up to about 40 psf and moderate wind. An elevated building must also resist sideways wind and earthquake loads, so the piers, post bases, bracing and connections must be checked and stamped by a local engineer. Getting the plan over the winter leaves time for that review, the permits and the glass order before the spring building season.
