## Three Bays for Firewood Rotation

The open front is split into three bays of about 59 in each, so you can keep this winter's wood, next winter's wood and fresh-split wood apart. Each bay holds about 1-1/3 cords stacked 64 in high, and there are 82-1/2 in of clear height from the deck to the underside of the beams.

## Built for Airflow and Heavy Loads

A full shed holds about 7 to 8 tons of seasoned hardwood, so the floor sits on 15 solid concrete blocks and three 4x4 pressure-treated runners. The 2x6 deck boards are spaced 1 in apart, and the back and end walls use 1x6 slats with 1 in gaps plus a 6 in vent gap under the back beam, so air moves through every stack.

## Construction Details of This Wood Storage Shed

- Foundation: 15 solid concrete blocks on compacted gravel, three pressure-treated 4x4 ground-contact runners and 4 earth anchors
- Floor: 2x6 frame at 16 in on center with twelve 2x6 deck boards spaced 1 in apart, deck 10-1/2 in above the blocks
- Frame: eight 4x4 posts, doubled 2x6 beams, twelve timber-style 4x4 knee braces and 2 diagonal end-wall braces
- Roof: 6/12 gable, 2x6 rafters at 32 in on center with rafter ties, 2x4 purlins, ribbed metal panels with a ridge cap, 12 in eaves and 6 in gable overhangs
- Walls: 1x6 horizontal slats with 1 in gaps on the back, ends and dividers; open front; open end walls above 87 in and in the gables
- Finish: oil-based semi-transparent exterior stain on the wood and end-cut preservative on every cut end of pressure-treated lumber
- Build time: 2 people, about 3 weekends

## File Format, Paper Size and Units

The plan is a 32-page PDF sized for US Letter paper. All dimensions are in imperial units (feet and inches) to 1/16 in, and lumber is named by nominal size and drawn at actual size; the cut lists also give metric values for reference. You can print the pages or read them on a tablet or phone at the build site.

## Who This DIY Wood Shed Is For

This plan is rated Intermediate and is built by 2 people in about 3 weekends. It suits homeowners who burn 3 to 4 cords a winter and want dry, seasoned firewood close at hand. Fall is when most people stock up on firewood, and a shed built now lets the next load season over the winter.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

After checkout, you can download the PDF from the download link on your order confirmation page and in your confirmation email. The download is instant, and nothing is shipped.

### What size shed do you need for 4 cords of wood?

A 16 x 7 ft firewood shed like this one holds about 4 cords of 16 in wood stacked 64 in high in three bays. Each bay holds about 1-1/3 cords.

### How long does firewood take to season in a wood shed?

Split firewood usually seasons in 6 to 12 months in a well-ventilated wood shed. It is ready when the ends show cracks and a moisture meter reads under 20%.

### How far should a firewood shed be from the house?

Keep the firewood shed at least 20 ft from the house so insects in the wood stay away from your home. Bring wood inside only when you are ready to burn it.

### Can I use shingles instead of metal on this firewood shed?

Yes, leave out the purlins and sheathe the rafters with 5/8 in plywood, then add drip edge, underlayment and shingles. The fascia and rake boards then sit about 1 in lower.
