Who This Large Chicken Coop Plan Is For
It suits builders with intermediate skills and two people to share the work. You will need common tools such as a circular saw, miter saw, drill/driver and level. The finished coop and run hold 18-20 standard hens. Because spring is the busiest season for new flocks, many builders plan over the winter and build before the first chicks arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big of a coop should I have for 20 chickens?
This raised coop has about 86 sq ft inside (4.3 sq ft per bird) and about 19 sq ft per bird in the run, sized for 18-20 standard hens.
Is there a chicken coop I can walk in?
Yes. The run is a walk-in chicken run with a 37-1/2" x 78-1/2" door, so you can stand inside to feed, clean and check on your hens.
Can I build this chicken coop without a concrete slab?
You can set the sills on solid concrete blocks instead. The plan explains how to add a buried hardware cloth apron around the run to stop digging predators.
Is it cheaper to build a chicken coop or buy one?
Building a large chicken coop yourself lets you control the materials and cost. The plan’s shopping list helps you price the whole project at your local store before you start.
