## What's Included in This Raised Chicken Coop Plan
The Wrenfield is a tall, raised walk-in chicken coop under a steep 12/12 gable roof, crowned with a louvered cupola and weathervane. A gabled canopy on two brackets shelters the Dutch door, three steps lead up to it, and a covered run steps down behind the coop under its own lower 6/12 roof.
- 8' x 12' walk-in coop with 85 sq ft of floor inside, raised 30" above the footings, with 7' 0" of clear headroom under the rafter ties and 10' 7" under the ridge
- 8' x 16' covered run with 113 sq ft of ground plus about 85 sq ft of shaded ground under the raised coop
- Dutch door 32" x 74-1/4" with a window in the top leaf, so you can open the top half alone on hot days
- Outside nest box with 4 nests and a shingled lift-up lid for collecting eggs from outside
- Three wide roost bars with 258" of perch over a removable dropping board
- Top-hinged pop door with a cleated ramp into the run and a 35-1/2" x 75-1/2" walk-in run door
- Louvered cupola over ridge vent slots, a louvered back-gable vent, screened eaves and three screened casement windows
- 1/2" hardware cloth on the run with a 24" anti-dig apron
- Estimated material cost of about $6,500 to $8,400 (prices vary by region and season)
## Walk-In Chicken Coop with Cupola for 15 to 20 Hens
The coop gives 4.2 to 5.6 sq ft per hen and 9.9 to 13.2 sq ft per hen of covered ground counting the run and the shade under the coop, so this large chicken coop houses 15 to 20 chickens. The 4 nests follow the rule of one nest for every 5 hens.
## File Format, Paper Size and Measurements
The plan is a 76-page PDF on US Letter paper. All dimensions are in feet and inches for standard US lumber, with the main sizes also listed in millimeters. Every part has its own code that appears in the cut list, the cut diagrams, the templates and the step pages.
## Who This Farmhouse Chicken Coop Plan Is For
This is an intermediate build for DIY builders who are comfortable with a circular saw, a drill/driver and basic framing. Two people can build it in about 12 to 14 weekend days, plus painting. Spring is the busiest building season, so fall and winter are a good time to price lumber and prepare the site before new chicks arrive. It also makes a practical gift for a backyard chicken keeper.

## Frequently Asked Questions
### What size coop do I need for 20 chickens?
A coop for 20 chickens needs about 4 sq ft of floor per hen inside plus run space. This plan gives 4.2 sq ft per hen in the coop and 9.9 sq ft per hen of covered ground at 20 hens.
### Why build a raised chicken coop?
A raised chicken coop stays dry, keeps rats from nesting under it and gives the hens shaded ground underneath. It also puts the nest box at a comfortable height for collecting eggs.
### Do I need the cupola on a chicken coop?
On this coop the cupola is the main high vent. If you leave it out, the plan explains how to add a second louvered gable vent or a ridge vent instead.
### Is it cheaper to build a chicken coop with a run yourself?
Building a chicken coop with a run yourself lets you control material costs and quality. This plan estimates materials at about $6,500 to $8,400, depending on your region and season.
### How do I download the PDF after purchase?
