## What's Included in This L-Shaped Chicken Coop Plan

The Fernhill is built round a corner. The dusty-blue lap-sided coop sits at the back left, and the cedar run wraps its right side and steps 7 ft forward, so the plan forms an L and one single-slope roof cut to the same L covers both. The roof is low at the front and rises to the back, where the outside nest box hangs at chest height under two high casements. In the sheltered corner yard in front of the coop, three cedar steps lead up to the coop door, and the walk-in run door opens right beside them.

- 12' x 10' walk-in coop with 107 sq ft of floor inside, 7' 2-1/2" high at the front wall rising to 9' 6-3/4" at the back wall, on short posts with the floor 2' 1-1/2" up
- L-shaped walk-in run with about 180 sq ft of ground, all under the roof, and 6' 11" clear under the front beam
- Cedar Z-brace coop door 32" x 72-1/2" up three steps, and a 31-1/2" x 78-3/4" run door facing the corner yard
- Outside nest box on the back wall with 5 nests at chest height and a shingled lid for collecting eggs without going in
- Three 110" roost bars with 330" of perch over a removable dropping board
- Guillotine pop door in the right end with a cleated ramp down into the run
- Three six-lite casement windows, louvered vents high in both end walls and screened eaves front and back
- L-shaped shed roof at 3/12 with straight 2x8 rafters and no valleys or hips, ice-and-water membrane, architectural asphalt shingles and gutters on both front eaves
- 1/2" hardware cloth on the run with a 24" apron round the run and the coop skirt
- Estimated material cost of about $5,800 to $7,500 (prices vary by region and season)

## Corner Chicken Coop with Wrap-Around Run for 20 to 25 Hens

The coop gives 4.3 to 5.4 sq ft per hen and the L-shaped run 7.2 to 9.0 sq ft per hen, so this large chicken coop houses 20 to 25 chickens. The 5 nests follow the rule of one nest for every 5 hens, and the three roosts give about 13" of perch per hen at 25.

## File Format, Paper Size and Measurements

The plan is a 72-page PDF on US Letter paper. All dimensions are in feet and inches for standard US lumber, with the main sizes also listed in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always use the written dimensions.

## Who This Walk-In Chicken Coop Plan Is For

This is an intermediate build for DIY builders who are comfortable with a circular saw, a jigsaw, a drill/driver, an impact driver and basic framing. Two people can build it in about 10 to 12 weekend days, plus painting. Spring is the busiest building season, so fall and winter are a good time to price lumber and prepare the site before new chicks arrive. It also makes a practical gift for a backyard chicken keeper.

## How to Use the Plan

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why build an L-shaped chicken coop?

The run wraps the coop instead of trailing behind it, so the whole building fits a squarer site. Both doors open onto one sheltered corner yard, and one roof plane covers everything with only straight rafters.

### Can I build the L-shaped chicken coop the other way round?

Yes. Mirror the whole plan left to right: build the run on the coop's left side and swap the pop door, the dropping board and the vents to the other end walls.

### Is a 3/12 shed roof steep enough for shingles?

Yes. 3/12 is above the 2/12 minimum of most shingle makers, provided the whole deck gets ice-and-water membrane or a double layer of underlayment, as shown in the plan.

### Do I need a building permit for this chicken coop?

It depends on your town. The coop floor is 120 sq ft, the roof about 407 sq ft and the high edge about 12' 8-5/16", so check your local rules before you build.

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

After checkout you get a download link on the order confirmation page and by email. Click it to download the PDF and save it to your computer, tablet or phone.
