## What's Included in This Lean-To Chicken Coop Plan
The Briarwood turns the usual coop and run around: the run comes first. A long, low eave with a gutter sits at the front, and behind the cedar run the single roof climbs at 3/12 to the tall back of the coop, which carries a row of clerestory windows high under the eave. The coop is clad in deep teal board-and-batten with cream trim. Two casements and the pop door open from the coop's front wall straight into the sheltered run, so the hens step out under the roof in any weather.
- 14' x 8' walk-in coop with 100 sq ft of floor inside, 8' 10-1/4" high at the front wall rising to 10' 8-1/2" at the back wall
- 14' x 10' roofed walk-in run in front with 128 sq ft of ground, 6' 8-3/4" under the front beam and 9' 8-3/4" at the coop
- Cedar Z-brace coop door 32" x 78-1/2" in the left end with a box step, and a 31-1/2" x 78-3/4" run door in the left side of the run
- Outside nest box on the right end with 5 nests and a shingled lid for collecting eggs without going in
- Two 158" roost bars with 316" of perch over a removable dropping board along the back wall
- Guillotine pop door from the coop's front wall into the run
- Two six-lite casement windows opening into the run, three fixed clerestory windows high in the back wall, a louvered vent in the right end and screened eaves
- Lean-to roof at 3/12 with 2x8 rafters spliced over the coop's front wall, ice-and-water membrane, architectural asphalt shingles and a 16 ft gutter along the low front eave
- 1/2" hardware cloth on the run with a 24" apron against digging predators
- Estimated material cost of about $6,200 to $8,000 (prices vary by region and season)
## Lean-To Chicken Coop with Run for 20 to 25 Hens
The coop gives 4.0 to 5.0 sq ft per hen and the roofed run 5.1 to 6.4 sq ft per hen, so this large chicken coop houses 20 to 25 chickens; add free-range time for 25 hens. The 5 nests follow the rule of one nest for every 5 hens, and the two long roosts give about 12-1/2" of perch per hen at 25.
## File Format, Paper Size and Measurements
The plan is a 67-page PDF on US Letter paper. All dimensions are in feet and inches for standard US lumber, with the main sizes also listed in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always use the written dimensions.
## Who This Walk-In Chicken Coop Plan Is For
This is an intermediate build for DIY builders who are comfortable with a circular saw, a jigsaw, a drill/driver, an impact driver and basic framing. Two people can build it in about 9 to 11 weekend days, plus painting. Spring is the busiest building season, so fall and winter are a good time to price lumber and prepare the site before new chicks arrive. It also makes a practical gift for a backyard chicken keeper.

## Frequently Asked Questions
### Why is the run in front of this lean-to chicken coop?
The roof can then rise in one long line from the low run to the tall coop, and the hens step from the pop door straight into a sheltered run. From the front the building looks like a low, open porch with the coop rising behind it.
### Is a 3/12 lean-to roof steep enough for shingles?
Yes, with full ice-and-water membrane or two layers of synthetic underlayment, lapped half, under the shingles, as shown in the plan. Below 3/12, use metal roofing instead.
### Can I make the chicken run deeper?
Yes. Lengthen the run rafters up to a 14 ft board and move the front beam and posts forward; the front beam drops 3" for every 12" you add.
### Do I need a building permit for this chicken coop?
It depends on your town. The coop floor is 112 sq ft, the roof about 322 sq ft and the high edge about 12' 8-5/16", so check your local rules before you build.
### How do I download the PDF after purchase?
