## What's Included in This Modern Farmhouse Chicken Coop Plan

The Ashby is a modern farmhouse coop with two identical steep gables standing side by side. The left gable is the coop, with white board-and-batten, black trim, a cedar Z-brace door and a pair of black four-lite windows. The right gable is the run, built as an open cedar frame wrapped in hardware cloth with the same white board-and-batten in its gable. A hidden valley gutter between the two roofs carries the rain to the back.

- 10' x 14' walk-in coop with 126 sq ft of floor inside, 6' 1/4" high at the side walls and 9' 6-5/8" under the ridge beam
- 10' x 14' roofed walk-in run with 129 sq ft of ground, 6' 4-3/4" under the side beams and 10' 6-3/8" under the ridge
- Cedar Z-brace coop door 32" x 78-1/2" in the front gable and a 31-1/2" x 78-3/4" run door
- Outside nest box on the left wall with 5 nests and a shingled lid for collecting eggs from outside
- Three 110" roost bars with 330" of perch over a removable dropping board
- Guillotine pop door with a ramp straight into the run
- Two six-lite casement windows with flower boxes, two fixed four-lite gable windows, louvered twin vents in both gables and screened eaves
- Two 10/12 gable roofs with doubled 2x12 ridge beams on 4x4 posts, architectural asphalt shingles and a 3" valley box gutter
- 1/2" hardware cloth on the run with a 24" apron against digging predators
- Estimated material cost of about $6,700 to $8,600 (prices vary by region and season)

## Twin Gable Chicken Coop and Run for 20 to 25 Hens

The coop gives 5.0 to 6.3 sq ft per hen and the roofed run 5.2 to 6.4 sq ft per hen, so this large chicken coop houses 20 to 25 chickens; add free-range time for 25 hens. The 5 nests follow the rule of one nest for every 5 hens, and the three roosts give about 13" of perch per hen at 25.

## File Format, Paper Size and Measurements

The plan is a 75-page PDF on US Letter paper. All dimensions are in feet and inches for standard US lumber, with the main sizes also listed in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always use the written dimensions.

## Who This Walk-In Chicken Coop Plan Is For

This is an intermediate build for DIY builders who are comfortable with a circular saw, a jigsaw, a drill/driver, an impact driver and basic framing. Two people can build it in about 10 to 12 weekend days, plus painting. Spring is the busiest building season, so fall and winter are a good time to price lumber and prepare the site before new chicks arrive. It also makes a practical gift for a backyard chicken keeper.

## How to Use the Plan

2. Print the shopping list and the master cut list, or open them on a tablet.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why does this chicken coop have two gables?

The run gets a real roof of its own with the same height and pitch as the coop, so it stays dry, shady and fully walk-in. From the front the pair reads as one balanced farmhouse building instead of a coop with a lean-to.

### What size chicken coop do I need for 25 chickens?

For a chicken coop for 25 chickens, plan both coop floor and run space. This plan gives 126 sq ft inside the coop and 129 sq ft in the roofed run, or 5.0 and 5.2 sq ft per hen at 25 hens.

### Can I make the chicken run longer?

Yes. Add pairs of side posts and rafters at 24" on center and lengthen the beams and ridge, splicing the beams over a post if needed.

### Do I need a building permit for this chicken coop?

It depends on your town. The coop floor is 140 sq ft, the roofed area about 350 sq ft and the peaks about 11' 7-3/4", so check your local rules before you build.

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?

After checkout you get a download link on the order confirmation page and by email. Click it to download the PDF and save it to your computer, tablet or phone.
