## What's Included in This Raised Chicken Coop Plan

The Juniper stands on legs. The coop is lifted 32-1/2" off the ground on nine posts, so four broad cedar steps lead up to its Z-brace door, the nest box sits at chest height on the left end and the hens get a shady, dry run underneath the whole building. Its terracotta board-and-batten walls with cream trim sit under one long single-slope roof that is low over the door and rises to the back. To the right the cedar run continues under the same roof, and a long cleated ramp leads down to it from the pop door.

- 12' x 10' walk-in coop with 107 sq ft of floor inside, 6' 10-1/2" high at the front wall rising to 9' 2-3/4" at the back wall
- About 178 sq ft of covered run ground: 71 sq ft beside the coop plus 107 sq ft underneath it, all wrapped in hardware cloth
- Cedar Z-brace coop door 32" x 72-1/2" up four steps, and a 31-1/2" x 78-3/4" walk-in run door
- Outside nest box on the left end with 5 nests at chest height and a shingled lid for collecting eggs without bending down
- Three 110" roost bars with 330" of perch over a removable dropping board
- Guillotine pop door in the right end with a 66" cleated ramp down into the run
- Three six-lite casement windows, two fixed upper windows high in the back wall, screened eaves front and back and a louvered vent in the right end
- Shed roof at 3/12 with 2x8 rafters, ice-and-water membrane, architectural asphalt shingles and a 22 ft gutter along the low front eave
- 1/2" hardware cloth round the run and under the coop, with a 24" apron against digging predators
- Estimated material cost of about $6,000 to $7,700 (prices vary by region and season)

## Elevated Chicken Coop with Run Underneath for 20 to 25 Hens

The coop gives 4.3 to 5.4 sq ft per hen, and the run beside and under the coop gives 7.1 to 8.9 sq ft per hen, so this large chicken coop houses 20 to 25 chickens; add free-range time for 25 hens. The 5 nests follow the rule of one nest for every 5 hens, and the three roosts give about 13" of perch per hen at 25.

## File Format, Paper Size and Measurements

The plan is a 70-page PDF on US Letter paper. All dimensions are in feet and inches for standard US lumber, with the main sizes also listed in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always use the written dimensions.

## Who This Chicken Coop on Stilts Plan Is For

This is an intermediate build for DIY builders who are comfortable with a circular saw, a jigsaw, a drill/driver, an impact driver and basic framing. Two people can build it in about 10 to 12 weekend days, plus painting. Spring is the busiest building season, so fall and winter are a good time to price lumber and prepare the site before new chicks arrive. It also makes a practical gift for a backyard chicken keeper.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why build a chicken coop on stilts?

A raised chicken coop floor 32-1/2" up stays dry, and rodents cannot nest under it. The hens also gain about 80 sq ft of shaded, covered run underneath, closed in by skirt rails and hardware cloth.

### Is a 3/12 shed roof steep enough for shingles?

Yes. 3/12 is above the 2/12 minimum of most shingle makers, provided the whole deck gets ice-and-water membrane or a double layer of underlayment, as shown in the plan.

### Can I make the chicken run longer?

Yes. Add a pair of posts at the right end, move the end wall out and add rafters at 24" on center, splicing the doubled beams over a post with the joints staggered.

### Do I need a building permit for this chicken coop?

It depends on your town. The coop floor is 120 sq ft, the roof about 267 sq ft and the high edge about 12' 11-5/16", so check your local rules before you build.

### How do I download the PDF after purchase?
