## What's Included in This Telescoping Chicken Coop Plan
The Halden is a telescope building, like an old farmhouse that grew in steps. A tall 12' x 12' walk-in coop with a 10/12 gable roof stands at one end, and two covered gable runs follow it in one straight line, each a little narrower and lower than the one before, with the same roof pitch. From the run door end you see three nested gables. The coop has falu-red walls, cream trim, a charcoal shingled roof and a cream Dutch door, and the run frames are natural cedar.
- 12' x 12' walk-in coop with 130 sq ft of floor inside, 8 ft walls and an open ceiling up to 154-5/16" at the ridge
- Long covered walk-in run in two parts, run A 10 ft wide and run B 8 ft wide, with about 245 sq ft of floor under the roofs
- Cream Dutch door 36-1/4" x 74-1/4" with a glazed lite: open the top half for air while the bottom half keeps the hens in
- Outside nest box on the back wall with 7 nests 11-3/8" wide x 17-1/4" deep, 18" above the floor, a landing perch inside and a shingled lid for collecting eggs from outside
- Four 95" roost bars with 380" of perch over a 4' x 8' removable dropping board
- Guillotine pop door with a ramp into run A
- Two walk-in run doors, one in the front of run A and a wide door in the end of run B
- Four six-lite windows (two in front, two in the west gable), louvered and screened vents high in both gables and screened eaves on all roofs
- Three 10/12 gable roofs with 2x6 rafters, 1/2" plywood, synthetic underlayment and charcoal architectural asphalt shingles
- Coop on 9 concrete blocks under three 4x6 PT skids; runs on 22 concrete piers with post bases
- 1/2" hardware cloth on the runs with a 24" anti-dig apron
## Large Gable Chicken Coop with Long Run for 30 to 40 Hens
The coop gives 3.3 to 4.3 sq ft per hen and the runs 6.1 to 8.2 sq ft per hen, so this large chicken coop holds 30 hens comfortably and up to 40; give the larger flock some free-range time every day. The four roost bars give 9.5" of perch per hen at 40.
## File Format, Paper Size and Measurements
The plan is an 80-page PDF on US Letter paper. All dimensions are in feet and inches for standard US lumber, with the main sizes also listed in millimeters. Drawings are not to scale, so always use the written dimensions.
## Who This Walk-In Chicken Coop Plan Is For
This plan is for DIY builders who have a circular saw or miter saw, a jigsaw, a drill-driver and impact driver, a post-hole digger or auger, two sturdy step ladders and roof brackets or a scaffold for the steep coop roof. Spring is the busiest building season, so fall and winter are a good time to price lumber and prepare the site before new chicks arrive. It also makes a practical gift for a backyard chicken keeper.

## Frequently Asked Questions
### What size chicken coop do I need for 30 chickens?
This 12' x 12' coop has 130 sq ft of floor and the runs about 245 sq ft, so it holds 30 chickens comfortably and up to 40 with daily free-range time.
### How many nesting boxes does this chicken coop have?
It has seven nests in an outside box on the back wall, with a shingled lid so you collect the eggs without going into the coop.
### Can I build the coop first and add the runs later?
Yes. The coop stands on its own and each run only meets the gable behind it with flashing, so you can build run A first and add run B the next season.
### Why does the chicken coop have a Dutch door?
The top half opens for light and air while the bottom half keeps the hens in, and you can lean on it and watch the flock.
### How do I download the PDF after purchase?
After checkout you get a download link on the order confirmation page and by email. Click it to download the PDF and save it to your computer, tablet or phone.
